How to Heal Your Chakras

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

The spiritual and the physical come together in the chakras: swirling wheels of cosmic energy starting at the base of the spine up to the crown of the head. Think of your chakras like an energetic stream coursing through the body. When in alignment, this stream flows smoothly, fueling your vitality making life feel effortless and “in the flow”.

But sometimes the chakras are blocked or overactive, disturbing the flow of energy and causing your life to feel out of balance. When you understand how the chakras work, you can focus on specific healing practices to restore a healthy energy flow in the mind, body, and spirit. Discover the vibrational frequencies of each chakra, the ways they impact your life, and how to heal your chakras to become your highest self.

How to Heal Your Chakras

When one chakra becomes imbalanced, it impacts your entire system. Tension builds in the mind and body. You experience dis-ease, emotionally and physically. Life just feels off. You can restore a balanced flow of energy through the chakras with these healing practices.

How to Heal the Root Chakra

Sanskrit: Muladhara

Element: Earth

Frequency color: Red

Situated at the base of the spine, think of your root chakra as the foundation for your life. The supportive root chakra connects us to the earth element, helping us feel grounded and stable to expand upwards from our roots. It relates to our most basic needs: safety, family, finance, stability.

When in balance, your needs are met. You feel safe, financially secure, supported by the universe. When the root chakra becomes imbalanced, you feel afraid of making ends meet. You worry about money and feel anxious, insecure, and vulnerable. You may also feel pain in the lower part of the body.

Root Chakra Healing

Repeat affirmations that invite safety such as:

“The universe will always provide what I need.”

“I am grounded, safe, and balanced.”

“My body is a safe home for my radiant spirit”

“I am financially secure”

Burn earthy essential oils, candles, or incense like sandalwood, cypress, cedarwood, rosewood, patchouli, cloves, black pepper, and ginger.

Practice stabilizing yoga postures that open and release tension from the lower body, such as yogi squat, goddess, and mountain pose.

Heal from past insecurity. Your root chakra may feel out of balance because you still carry the wounds of insecurity from a past life event or trauma. Consider challenges you’ve had to overcome, relating to home, family life, or lack of safety. Focus healing energy to release pain of the past.

Reconnect with Mother Nature. The root chakra relates to the earth element, so you can invoke her stabilizing, grounding energy by spending more time in nature.

Carry root chakra crystals and stones, such as obsidian, onyx, red jasper, or garnet. You can also meditate with them, wear them as jewelry, place them on an altar, or keep them by your bedside.

How to Heal the Sacral Chakra

Sanskrit: Svadhisthana

Element: Water

Frequency color: Orange

Just like its guiding water element, the sacral chakra relates to our ability to flow with the rhythms of life. It sits in the lower abdomen below the tailbone and relates to emotional and sexual energy in the body. When in balance we feel “in the flow”, flexible and accepting of change. You feel creative, playful, and sensual.

When out of balance, you fear change. Y Signs of sacral chakra imbalance also include addictive/compulsive behaviors, sexual dysfunction, and emotional instability. Imbalances of the sacral chakra manifest in the body as issues with reproduction or pain in the lower back, kidney, or stomach.

Repeat affirmations to embrace change and pleasure, such as:

“I embrace and celebrate my sexuality”

“I flow with the rhythms of life”

“The sweetness of life flows through me”

“Creativity flows through me freely”

Burn cleansing essential oils, candles, or incense like eucalyptus, chamomile, and spearmint.

Practice hip opening yoga postures, such as yogi squats, happy baby, and bound angle.

Heal from past trauma relating to sexuality, creativity, and resistance to change. When out of balance, a person feels emotionally unstable, sexual dysfunction, and a lack of creative energy. Can you pinpoint events from your past that will help bring healing to these areas of your life?

Spend more time near water. The sacral chakra relates to the water element, so you can invoke her free-flowing energy by spending more time near the ocean, lakes, streams, in the rain, or taking baths.

Carry sacral chakra crystals and stones, such as orange citrine, amber, carnelian, or tiger’s eye. You can also meditate with them, wear them as jewelry, place them on an altar, or keep them by your bedside.

How to Heal the Solar Plexus Chakra

Sanskrit: Manipura

Element: Fire

Frequency color: Yellow

The fiery solar plexus chakra sits in the abdominal region. When your solar plexus shines bright, you radiate strength and confidence, standing tall in your personal power and the ability to transform. Out of balance, you struggle with self-esteem and making decisions.

Solar plexus healing

Repeat affirmations to build confidence, such as:

“I stand in my personal power”

“I love and accept myself”

“I am strong and courageous”

“I stand up for myself”

Burn fiery, spicy essential oils, candles, or incense like cinnamon, saffron, sandalwood, and ginger,

Practice empowering yoga postures like warrior, boat pose, or mountain as well as breath of fire. Twisting asanas can also help release toxins and tension from the digestive organs, which relate to the solar plexus.

Build your self-esteem. When the solar plexus is out of balance, you often experience issues with self-esteem and confidence. Concentrate healing on these aspects of your life to realize your self-worth.

Spend more time near fire. The sacral chakra relates to the fire element, so you can invoke her invigorating energy by sitting by a campfire, lighting candles, or soaking in the sunshine.

Carry solar plexus crystals and stones, such as sunstone, agate, yellow topaz, and yellow citrine. You can also meditate with them, wear them as jewelry, place them on an altar, or keep them by your bedside.

How to Heal the Heart Chakra

Sanskrit: Anahata

Element: Air

Frequency color: Green

At the center of the chest, the heart chakra radiates love, compassion, and forgiveness. When in balance, you feel open-hearted to give and receive love. When out of balance, you feel unworthy, co-dependent, and resentful. Heart chakra imbalance can also cause physical ailments, like chest pains or cardiac issues.

Heart chakra healing

Repeat loving affirmations, such as:

“I am worthy of love”

“I forgive myself for my mistakes and grow from them”

“I am open to love”

“I give and receive love openly”

Burn heart balancing essential oils, candles, or incense like rose, lavender, and ylang ylang.

Practice chest opening yoga postures like cobra, upward facing dog, and sphinx.

Open your heart. Painful experiences with love can cause blockages in the heart chakra. Focus healing energy to your heart, by talking to friends or a therapist. Practice giving and receiving love, both to yourself and to others.

Practice breathing exercises, to connect with the pranaya life force and fill the chest with air.

Use healing stones with vibrational love energy in the colors of green and pink, like rose quartz, jade, green calcite, green tourmaline, or green aventurine

How to Heal the Throat Chakra

Sanskrit: Vishuddha

Element: Ether (Space)

Frequency color: Blue

Expressing your authentic self happens when you have a balanced throat chakra. You communicate openly and connect with your inner truth. At the same time, you also allow others to express themselves authentically by listening actively.

An imbalanced throat chakra leads to miscommunication in relationships. You have trouble saying how you really feel and may also talk over other people. Physically, you may experience thyroid issues, cough, cold, or sore throat.

Throat chakra healing

Repeat affirmations for authentic self-expression, such as:

“I speak my inner truth”

“I am an active listener”

“I feel comfortable speaking my mind”

“I set clear boundaries”

“I am balanced in speaking and listening”

Burn essential oils, candles, or incense like cinnamon, saffron, sandalwood, and ginger,

Practice healthy, assertive communication. Speaking assertively means the ability to express your needs and desires with confidence. It encourages balanced conversations giving everyone a chance to speak.

Burn ether incense, like jasmine, sage, and cypress.

Use healing stones for communication that vibrate in the shades of blue, like turquoise, lapis lazuli, amazonite, blue kyanite, and aquamarine.

How to Heal the Third Eye Chakra

Sanskrit: Ajna

Element: All (earth, air, fire, water, ether)

Frequency color: Indigo

Vibrational frequencies continue to rise as we focus healing energy on the third eye chakra—where the intuition flows. A balanced third eye means connection with your inner knowing. Your intuition guides you, and you find it easy to make decisions. When out of balance, you feel confused, lost, and lacking direction. A third eye imbalance can also manifest physically as headaches or vision problems.

Third eye healing

Repeat affirmations to connect to your intuition, such as:

“I trust and follow my intuition”

“I let my inner wisdom guide me”

“I am connected to my true path and purpose.”

“I am connected with the wisdom of the universe.”

Burn awakening essential oils, candles, or incense like bay laurel, palo santo, myrrh, Roman chamomile, nutmeg, sandalwood, and St. John’s Wort that activate psychic energies.

Practice enlightening yoga postures like child’s pose and humble warrior. Connect with your inner self and let your thoughts settle through pure awareness during mindfulness meditation.

Connect with the divine feminine. To heal the third eye you want to connect with your divine feminine, the healing, nurturing Yin energy, that allows you to trust your intuition. Connect with her through heart listening meditation, trusting your instinct, and paying attention to the signs in your dreams and around you. Go on a spiritual retreat, to awaken the divine feminine in a sacred destination.

Carry third eye crystals and stones that awaken psychic abilities, such as amethyst, fluorite, sodalite, purple sapphire, and azurite. You can also meditate with them, wear them as jewelry, place them on an altar, or keep them by your bedside.

How to Heal the Crown Chakra

Sanskrit: Sahaswara

Element: Cosmic energy

Frequency color: Violet

We connect with our highest self at the crown chakra, the opening of our physical body to the spiritual source on and above the crown of the head. When in balance, you feel enlightened and connected to your purpose. When out of balance, your happiness depends on external conditions, and you become too caught up with material gains, like status, money, and fame.

Crown chakra healing

Repeat affirmations for spiritual enlightenment, such as:

“I feel connected with my highest self”

“I honor the divine within me”

“I am guided by a higher power and inner wisdom.”

Burn enlightening essential oils, candles, or incense like myrrh, camphor, and frankincense.

Practice meditation and prayer, to connect to your highest self and inner knowing.

Go on a wellness retreat. Showing up to work on time, paying the bills, running errands, buying groceries, when you get caught up in the day to day you lose connection with your true self—a light being in a physical body on earth. A wellness retreat takes you out of the mundane into the sacred. Surrounded by healers, you open your mind to reawakening, an opportunity for enlightenment and full chakra healing.
